Stress, Resilience & Functioning - 8 Week Peer-led Program (Building Emotional Resilience)

Presentation Overview

Stress, Resilience and Functioning (SRF) is Assoc. Professor Jon Lane’s latest project to help Service personnel be aware of, and manage, the potential adverse mental health effects of their service.

This 8-week program is person-focused and squarely aimed at better personal and interpersonal functioning, through improved skills in reflective practice and active (and effective) efforts to change the way service personnel respond to stress and stressful situations.

This program is underpinned by Jon’s personal experience of Service life, his own mental health challenges, and his expertise in a range of different psychological, psychiatric, and sociological theories in a program designed to help individuals at all parts of their journeys though life.

This program was developed in response to the need for a psychoeducation and skills-based program in the initial stages of Service careers, and/or the initial stages of distress related mental health challenges amongst military and first responders.

The program builds on previous identified successes of other peer-led programs where the value of service specific language and examples to explain key psychological concepts has resulted in high levels of engagement of the program, retention of the knowledge, and reduced impacts of stress related mental health challenges.

SRF has been delivered through 2024 to over one hundred Service personnel (both current and former serving military, and first responders) through a number of national programs supported by RSL LifeCare NSW, School of Military Engineering, and Open Arms Tasmania with great success and engagement.

SRF has also been developed into a licenced model involving a robust ‘Train the Trainer’ program whereby new facilitators are supported through a guided training process, including face to face training modules, supported facilitation of the SRF program and an online education platform to ensure high levels of confidence and competence, and integrity of content.

Presentation Key Learnings:
1. Showcase the latest person-focussed, peer-led program, supporting military and first responders.

2. Outline the various modes of program delivery available to Service organisations around Australia, and abroad.

3. Outline the licencing model available for Service organisations to train internal facilitators to build organisational capacity and support greater reach to frontline personnel.
