Behind the Front Lines: Strategies to Support the Mental Well-being of Suicide Postvention Coordinators
Presentation Overview
Suicide Postvention Co-ordinators are an under-recognised cohort of frontline responders. They provide immediate responses to support families, workplaces, schools, communities, discoverers, witnesses and others impacted by a suicide. Constant exposure to suicidal crises and high-stress situations affects their mental health and wellbeing. They often work in sole positions, burnout is common and staff turnover is high.
This presentation discusses:
i. The impact of their role exposure on Suicide Postvention Co-ordinators’ mental health and wellbeing and explores strategies and coping mechanisms used by Coordinators to manage stress and emotional strain.
ii. Effective organisational support structures and peer support networks that have been introduced by some leaders to mitigate burnout and emotional fatigue.
iii. The role of training, ongoing professional development and compassionate leadership in enhancing resilience and maintaining mental well-being.
Presentation Key Learnings:
1. Describe how constant and unpredictable exposure to stressful suicidal crises affects the mental health of Suicide Postvention Co-ordinators.
2. Identify support systems and resources for Suicide Postvention Co-ordinators.
3. Discuss some effective organisational support structures and peer support networks that can mitigate burnout and emotional fatigue.
