Wilderness-based Interventions and Circuit-breaking to Support the Mental Health of Veterans, Police and First Responders

Abstract

Trojans Trek taps into the wealth of lived experiences and the dedication of volunteers who guide profound expeditions, delving into matters of identity, personal values, purpose, and the moral wounds carried by veterans, police, and first responders. Over six days, they converge on our backcountry odysseys, led by vehicles traversing our land's rugged terrains. A decade's worth of robust evidence, meticulously gleaned from formal appraisals by esteemed universities and pre- and post-trek surveys spanning years, illuminates the remarkable advantages bestowed upon participants by this undertaking.

Acknowledging the intrinsic, personal motivations propelling attendees and cognisant that steadfast assistance transcends isolated episodes, Trojans Trek is undergoing a metamorphic shift. The transformation entails a comprehensive strategy to (i) improve our current work, (ii) work with organisations to create an environment to counter burnout, compassion fatigue, and the gnawing spectres of moral harm, and (iii) ensure everything we do is university-supported backed research. This evolution underscores proactive measures, nurturing a harmonious interplay between vocation and life.

This discourse embarks on an enlightenment expedition, chronicling the cumulative knowledge amassed thus far. A transformative juncture has arisen, steering towards a novel focus—to furnish unwavering lifelines attuned to the unique rhythms of each veteran, police officer, and first responder. These lifelines are not only lifelines of recovery but also catalysts for burgeoning resilience. Empowered thus, they shall stride forward, not merely participating but thriving wherever destiny beckons.
