Piloting Mindarma at the AFP: Essential Psychological Skills and Self-Care Strategies for Police
Abstract
As a proactive approach to protecting mental health, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Mindarma worked together to pilot the evidence-based online program and a four-part webinar series with a group of their members based in Victoria (n=78). The program was evaluated via the Connors Davidson Resilience Scale. AFP members also had the opportunity to share their experience of the program via de-identified written feedback. 86% of members accessed Mindarma. Data analysis found 25.6% of members reported low and 23.1% reported low-average resilience at baseline. Low resilience has been identified as a risk factor for depression and PTSD (Wild et al., 2016; Joyce et al., 2019). Research suggests that early interventions focused on psychological skills development may bolster resilience and wellbeing and protect long-term mental health. Pre-post data analysis found a statistically significant increase in resilience among AFP members post-training and again at 6-month follow-up. This concurs with recent results observed at NSW Ambulance, Ambulance Victoria and the original RCT (Barrett&Joyce 2022; Wooldridge&Joyce,2023; Joyce, 2019). Improvements at 6-months likely reflect ongoing skills development, i.e. members continued to engage strategies learned during the training. This is also evident in feedback from members:
"An excellent program which equips participants with the practical skills to deal with stressful situations. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to be proactive about their mental health.”
“The program was extremely practical, wasn't overwhelming with too much information and so easy to apply in my life. I really liked the 15 minute bite-size sessions.”
"I found the program highly beneficial. Having gained the skills and education through Mindarma, I was able to acknowledge and name my thoughts and emotions, I feel that in doing this I was able to reduce the impact of vicarious trauma which I was exposed to whilst completing the program.”
