Developing a Peer Support Program to Support Surf Lifeguards in New Zealand
Abstract
Over the last 18 months, Surf Life Saving NZ has developed a peer support program to support the mental health and wellbeing of New Zealand’s 5000 surf lifeguards and their specialist lifeguard search and rescue teams. This presentation covers how the program was developed, the training undertaken, as well as bringing to light key learnings for other Frontline organisations. This presentation provides the opportunity to learn from a real world case-study; from research and inception to program delivery.

Biography
Ari is responsible for the strategy and delivery of wellbeing support for Surf Life Saving New Zealand. Ari has a Masters in Health Science which focuses on the mental health of paramedics. In addition to his role at Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Ari is a lecturer of applied mental health and wellbeing at AUT University in Auckland. Prior to these roles Ari was an Intensive Care Paramedic.
