Standing by and Supporting Our Unsung Heroes
Abstract
Standby Support After Suicide have well established referral pathways with first responders for people bereaved and impacted by suicide across the nation. They refer people and communities to our programme, and this oral presentation will highlight some of our 31 sites across the country, showing video presentations from sites, demonstrating the engagement of our first responders.
This presentation will:
1. Explain our programme and supports and the vital role our unsung heroes, our first responders play in having those people bereaved by suicide supported.
2. Engagement using lived experience storytelling (Jo Langford), the audience will hear a firsthand experience of how first responders were able to the most difficult time an easier process to navigate for a family bereaved by suicide.
3. Exploring Tim Degoey’s transition from first responder to the suicide postvention sector, and how he identified a need for our unsung heroes to be supported. Posing the question “who is supporting the supporter” we will explain how moving forward StandBy aims to walk alongside our unsung heroes. the three key learnings from this presentation will be explanation and education around our referral pathways 2 supporting our unsung heroes and three how lived experience is best practise and can guide service provision moving forward.

Biography
Tim De Goey is a Partnership Coordinator for StandBy Support After Suicide. Prior to this, Tim spent 15 years as a Frontline Police Officer serving in both the Western Australia and the Queensland Police Service. Tim lost two colleagues’ to suicide within in a 12-month period and is passionate about ensuring first responders are supported by those that no longer stand on the front line.

Biography
Jo Langford is The StandBy National Lived Experience Coordinator and has been working in the sector for 7 years, advocating for the voice of lived experience, guiding best practice and speaking at conferences and events.
