Understanding Northern Australia – The Value we Place on Nature and Views about Climate Change
Presentation Overview
This presentation explores the crucial role of the natural environment in shaping liveability across Northern Australia, focusing on how residents value and experience access to nature in their communities. The ability to connect with nature has long been a defining feature of life in the north, but how well does this align with residents’ lived experiences? Drawing on annually updated community sentiment data, this session will highlight the importance of access to the natural environment and the extent to which expectations are met. It will also examine how environmental access contributes to wellbeing and quality of life in Northern Australia.
In addition to liveability, the discussion will examine residents’ perspectives on climate change—how they perceive its current and future impacts, their confidence in community adaptation, and the actions they believe should be prioritised. Northern Australians experience some of the most immediate and tangible effects of climate change, yet their views on risk, resilience, and responsibility vary significantly within and across regions.
The presentation will compare Northern Australians’ perspectives with those of inner-city and southern residents, exploring what they have in common and where their views are in conflict. It will also track how opinions on environmental access and climate change have shifted over time, providing insight into evolving community concerns. These findings will help policymakers and planners align community values with sustainable development, adaptation strategies, and infrastructure investment, ensuring that both the natural environment and community wellbeing remain at the heart of future decision-making.
