Beyond the Surface: Addressing Trauma in Autistic Youth Through Inclusive, Trauma-Informed Care
Abstract
Autistic youth are at an elevated risk for experiencing trauma compared to their neurotypical peers. This trauma can stem from various sources, including sensory sensitivities, social isolation, bullying, and even the everyday challenges of navigating a world that often lacks understanding or accommodation for their needs. Despite this increased vulnerability, trauma in autistic youth is often overlooked, underdiagnosed, or misunderstood. Trauma responses may be misinterpreted as behavioural issues, further marginalising these individuals. There is also an alarming overlap between trauma symptoms and autistic traits, complicating the assessment process. This presentation will explore the prevalence of trauma within the autistic youth population and the specific vulnerabilities that contribute to their heightened risk. Research demonstrates that early recognition and intervention can drastically improve outcomes, yet many autistic young people lack access to trauma-informed care. This discussion will focus on the need for professionals to adopt an anxiety and trauma-informed lens when working with autistic youth, moving away from punitive approaches that exacerbate stress and overwhelm. Key recommendations for supporting this population include creating safer, more inclusive environments, promoting self-regulation skills, and ensuring that therapeutic interventions account for the unique sensory and social profiles of autistic individuals. Additionally, fostering a strong network of support involving families, schools, and healthcare providers is crucial for mitigating the long-term impacts of trauma. The session will provide practical strategies and emphasise the importance of holistic, person-centred care that respects the diverse experiences of autistic youth while empowering them to thrive.
