Tiktok, It’s Time to Learn What Young People Are Really Doing Online

Abstract

When it comes to social media and online gaming, there can be a disconnect between what young people experience and what adults think they are experiencing. Algorithms and AI are playing a significant role in shaping online experiences for children and young people.
Understanding the online experiences of children and young people will help trusted adults promote safer and more positive online experiences.

This session will:
• highlight how young people are using some of the popular social networking apps and games
• identify the online harms children and young people can experience and highlight eSafety’s reporting schemes
• provide strategies to have better conversations with children and young people about social media use, managing content and reporting negative online experiences.
