Thinking Traps: Connecting with Gen Z Before Their Thoughts Spiral

Abstract

Psychology, and CBT in particular, has incredible tools to deal with anxious and unhelpful thoughts.

Unfortunately, it often takes something drastic in a young person's life for them to seek help and learn these tools from a psychologist. Additionally, the way Gen Z communicates and interacts is fundamentally different now - meaning the way they internalize and understand concepts needs to change.

This engaging and interactive workshop will equip attendees with a set of tools and a new language to help young people untangle from their anxious thoughts.

Drawing on evidence-based strategies from CBT, the workshop uses a relatable metaphor that Gen Z connects with to address the ways young people catastrophise social and academic situations and get stuck in their thoughts, leading to outcomes like school refusal or disengagement.

Three Key Learnings:
1. The way we refer to and communicate our thoughts matters: by changing our language around anxiety, we can better connect with Gen Z and enable them to open up more

2. We don't need to be reactive with CBT: by teaching young people CBT tools in ways they relate to, we can equip them with strategies to manage their anxiety before it spirals

3. We can help young people challenge their thoughts: not every thought needs to be believed, especially when it comes to anxiety
