Empowering Youth Mental Health through Digital Innovation: Singapore’s Mindline and Let’s Talk Initiatives
Abstract
In response to growing concerns around youth mental health, Singapore launched mindline.sg in June 2020 as a government-backed initiative aimed at improving accessibility to mental health resources for the general population. With over 1.5 million unique visitors (representing 25% of Singapore’s population), mindline.sg has since become a leading digital platform for mental health support.
Building on this success, the Let’s Talk by mindline platform was introduced in 2023, with a dedicated focus on youth and adolescents. The platform now attracts close to 150,000 visitors, providing an anonymous space where young people can engage in peer-led discussions about mental wellness, supported by professional guidance. A key feature of Let’s Talk is the 'Ask-a-Therapist' function, which enables users to seek advice from mental health professionals such as counsellors and psychologist, bridging the gap between self-care, peer suport and professional intervention.
Our presentation will highlight how we have integrated static mental health resources from mindline.sg with peer and professional support through Let’s Talk, ensuring a comprehensive approach to support youth mental health. We will share how youth involvement in the co-design process has been central to ensuring relevance and engagement, and how we have leveraged AI-driven tools to personalize support and streamline resource allocation. Through this digital and human-touch hybrid approach, we aim to enhance mental health outcomes for adolescents while addressing manpower shortages in the mental health sector.
By sharing our journey, we hope to offer insights that can be adapted globally to support adolescent mental health in a scalable and sustainable manner.
Three Key Learnings:
1. Co-Design with Youth: Involving adolescents in the platform design ensures relevance and engagement, making digital mental health tools more effective for addressing youth-specific concerns.
2. Blending Static Resources with Real-Time Support: Combining evidence-based mental health resources with peer discussions and professional guidance creates a comprehensive care system, catering to both self-help and immediate support needs.
3. Data-Driven Insights: Analyzing user engagement helps identify key stressors and trends in youth mental health, allowing for personalized interventions and continuous improvement of mental health services.
