Supporting Parents During Uncertain Times
Abstract
As the world moves beyond the experiences of COVID19, it is increasingly clear that children and young people are continuing to experience the effects of restrictions and experiences related to the pandemic. For younger children this relates quite clearly to their development as so much of their social and emotional development occurs within the context of interactions with others. For adolescents, the changing nature of day to day life and the prospect of an uncertain future continue to play out in the way they see themselves and their relationships. Parents similarly were impacted by the pandemic with a range of experiences in supporting their children, including learning at home, additional financial pressures and living with their own uncertainties.
This presentation will explore what we currently know about the ongoing impacts of the pandemic (and uncertainties since then) on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. It will draw upon a socioecological model to explore ways that parents can be supported to, in turn, support their children.
The role of education and community settings will be explored in relation to ways that parents can be engaged and supported. The potential uses of digital technology to provide information and access to resources by parents will be included as potential ways that parents. The challenges and barriers facing mental health professionals working with parents will also be considered along with innovative ways to work more creatively and in partnership with parents.
