Direction's Teen Clinic. Reducing barriers and giving agency to young people.

Abstract

We would like to present on a new initiative called Directions Teen Clinic.
This is a Health Care Model proven to increase young peoples access to health care in the community and give young people agency over their health care.
Directions Teen Clinic is a nurse run clinic that sits in a community centre. It works on reducing barriers around access for young people who might not otherwise get appropriate health care. Teen Clinic provides early intervention and education.
Young people can access teen clinic for a wide range of health issues, these include minor injuries, rashes all the way through to sexual and mental health. It works with the local community to help young people access the care they need.
When asked, teens say that providing a service that is:
* teen friendly
* confidential
* free
* in close proximity to schools, transport and other youth hubs.

Direction's Teen Clinic is run in a community youth centre which is a place young people feel comfortable to access.
Teen Clinic is run by nurses who understand the importance of confidentiality.
Teen Clinic is free and young people do not need to make an appointment or have a medicare card.
Teen Clinic is situated in the community near local schools and in walking distance to public transport hubs. We are currently talking to local school to do some in-reach
We work with a psychologist who will leave 1-2 appointments a week for our clients and bulk bills them under a GPMP. In this way bulk billing clients can be incorporated into psychology practices with minimal financial impact. We are working with other psychologists and looking for funding to allow PHD students to be involved.
