Navigating the complexities of AOD Peer Work

Abstract

Navigating the complexities of AOD Peer Work
There is an extensive body of research and practice-based evidence for the development and support of a peer workforce, demonstrating that the introduction of peer workers into the system is a necessary and positive step forward for the AOD sector.
Despite this, there are many organisational barriers that impact the decision and the capacity to employ peer workers.
These include: Cultural issues, funding issues, criminal history, definition of recovery, organisational capacity for supervision and support, role clarity, training and professional development, and psychosocial hazards.
Following a pilot program in Tasmania, The Salvation Army piloted a national Peer workforce development program across all states and territories.
Hear about our processes, how we managed the barriers to peer work, see the tools we developed, our training program for peers, peer roles and stories from the frontline.
