Enabling infrastructure to build, connect and grow the Northern Territory

Presentation Overview

Northern Australia’s future prosperity depends on resilient infrastructure, efficient connectivity and the strategic capability to support emerging industries and realise the significant economic opportunities on the horizon.
Guided by its vision to ‘Build, Connect and Grow the Territory’, the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is delivering a suite of enabling infrastructure projects to unlock the north’s economic potential, improve population growth and drive sustainable development.
These projects are significant economic enablers for the Northern Territory, connecting the Territory’s natural resources with export opportunities, unlocking service industries and strengthening connections across the region.
To build the foundations of a stronger logistics network, Regional Logistics Hubs will strategically locate terminals, rail sidings, warehousing and other enabling infrastructure along the Darwin-Tarcoola rail line. This will strengthen intermodal freight movement, improve local supply chains and enhance connection to the national transport network.
To connect major energy projects in the Beetaloo Sub-basin to global markets, Territory Energy Link is progressing through the feasibility stage. TEL proposes a 670km buried services corridor to carry gas, water, optical fibre, hydrogen gas and other services.
To grow the north’s economy, manufacturing capability and local jobs, the Middle Arm Precinct will capitalise on the Territory’s access to natural gas, critical minerals and renewable energy. This project will support long-term economic security with substantial flow-on benefits as the project progresses.
The Adelaide River Off-stream Water Storage (AROWS) project offers a sustainable and adaptable water source solution for the next 100 years, with current modelling showing the project can double Darwin’s current water supply. As an off-stream storage, it offers substantially better environmental outcomes compared to a traditional dam, whilst providing greater resilience to a changing climate to supply safe and secure drinking water for the Territory.
Together, these projects form an integrated, future-focused infrastructure network that builds resilience, strengthens connectivity and grows the strategic capability required for a thriving northern Australia.
