A survey of Modern Methods of Construction and how vital innovation is to Northern Australia.
Presentation Overview
A review of the state of play in the field of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), including market appetite, industry innovation and regulatory response. History of prefabricated buildings and their use in remote locations. Challenges of labour market trends for the traditional construction. Comparison of on-shore manufacture and imported modular and the capacity to meet the needs of Northern Australia (and especially remote communities). Need to work with local communities to develop suitable designs. Review of NAAS projects and examples of products which suit needs of communities in Northern Australia. The needed shift in mindset from on-site construction to buildings as manufactured items – “a product not a project”.
Biography
Stirling served as a Queensland Cabinet Minister for 10 years across his 15 years in the Queensland Parliament. His ministerial responsibilities included Infrastructure & Planning; Employment; Skills; Mining; Transport; Commonwealth Games; Local Government; Multicultural Affairs; Racing; Innovation; Tourism and Sport. In these roles, Stirling was involved in large transformative projects across three levels of government. Since May 2025, Stirling’s primary commitment is as Director of Strategy Development at Northern Australia Accommodation Solutions (NAAS), where he applies his extensive experience and connections with local councils.
