Breaking Down the Silos: Responding to Co-Occurring Domestic Violence and Child Sexual Abuse
Presentation Overview
Although it is well recognised that some perpetrators commit both domestic violence and child sexual abuse, responses to these two forms of gender-based violence are siloed within distinct sectors. Drawing on Australian research with survivors and professionals, this presentation explores the challenges that women and children face in seeking support and protection from compounding forms of violence. Secrecy within families, intergenerational trauma and social silences and myths about gender-based violence empowered perpetrators and constricted women’s and children’s space for agency. Against a backdrop of fragmented and underfunded supports, women’s intersections with the family law courts were further complicated by the evidentiary difficulties in substantiating child sexual abuse. Professionals and survivors advocated for therapeutic, comprehensive support that provided care for women and children in the context of co-occurrence, and helped women navigate competing demands and complex systems.
