Understanding Trauma and Psychological First Aid in Disaster and Emergency Management

Abstract

This presentation describes the importance of trauma-informed, community-led approaches to prepare and respond to the psychosocial needs and resilience of communities affected by natural disasters.

It explores the integration of psychological first aid (PFA), and education in disaster and emergency management, focusing on strengthening community resilience, safety, and wellbeing.

We will discuss how communities, when equipped with appropriate knowledge and resources, can become active participants in their own recovery. Central to this approach is the recognition of the critical role of social support networks, the importance of mental health awareness, self-care strategies and the integration of timely and local knowledge in response strategies.

The session aims to provide case studies and practical tools to not only improve disaster response outcomes but also build long-term resilience.
