Building Resilience: Insights from Families with Seriously Ill Children in Rural and Remote Areas during and after Disaster and Emergency Situations.

Abstract

This study explores resilience among families navigating the challenges of caring for seriously ill children in rural and remote areas. In the face of adversity, families and communities often demonstrate remarkable strength and adaptability. Through qualitative interviews, this research focused on understanding the experience of vulnerable children and families during and after disaster situations to illuminate the multifaceted aspects of resilience within these communities, shedding light on their experiences.

Drawing upon a diverse sample of families across various rural and remote regions, this study employs a qualitative approach to capture the narratives and lived experiences of participants. Utilising thematic analysis, the research identifies key themes and patterns emerging from the interviews, offering rich insights into the factors that foster resilience in the face of adversity.

Preliminary findings suggest that resilience among families with seriously ill children arises through a range of challenges in disaster and emergency situations. Themes such as familial bonds, social support networks, coping strategies, and resource mobilisation emerge as central pillars of resilience within these families. Moreover, the study explores the unique challenges and disparities faced by families residing in rural and remote areas, underscoring the importance of tailored interventions and support services to address their specific needs.

By amplifying the voices of these resilient families, this research aims to inform policymakers, healthcare professionals, and support organisations about resilience in rural and remote contexts. It seeks to foster greater understanding of the experiences of families with seriously ill children, paving the way for more effective interventions and support systems.

This presentation offers an exploration of resilience within a population often marginalised and underserved in healthcare discourse. Through an in-depth analysis of family narratives, it invites attendees to reflect on the unique challenges of these families and the ways resilience is built in families and communities.
