Trauma recovery: Evidence-driven recovery approaches for psychological trauma injuries, advancing wellbeing and return to work outcomes

Abstract

In the wake of disasters or emergencies, workers whose job it is to respond are not only susceptible to physical injuries but also to psychological trauma. Addressing these psychological injuries is paramount for their recovery and successful return to work. This talk explores the imperative of establishing robust recovery and rehabilitation practices for workers who experience psychological trauma injuries in their line of duty.

Drawing from recent studies and real-world examples, the speaker delves into the core principles crucial for optimal recovery and return to work outcomes. Highlighting insights from research on psychosocial distress among frontline healthcare workers and first responders, the presentation underscores the pressing need for tailored, trauma-informed interventions and support systems.

Furthermore, the talk examines lessons gleaned from studies on acute stress disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression in disaster or rescue workers, as well as PTSD trajectories among workers involved in major recovery efforts. These findings along with Kristin's professional expertise indicate recovery from trauma injuries requires comprehensive support including evidence-based diagnosis and treatment plans interwoven with trauma-informed return to work plans.

The speaker also shares insights from their team's work in managing the recovery of injured workers affected by terrorist attacks, disasters, or emergencies. By integrating evidence-based practices and leveraging real-world experiences, this talk offers actionable strategies for promoting psychological wellbeing and facilitating successful reintegration into the workforce.

Ultimately, Kristin advocates for a comprehensive approach to trauma recovery—one that prioritises evidence-driven interventions, fosters resilience, and empowers injured workers to embark on a path towards healing and restoration.
