See, Hear, Believe: Empowering Frontline Workers to Support LGBTQ+ Communities Against Domestic Violence
Abstract
This joint conference presentation by Workplace Respect, Impact By Design, and LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation will delve into how frontline services and educators can securely record, share, and learn from lived experiences while imparting crucial skills in responding to domestic and family violence (DFV) within the LGBTQ+ community.
We recently launched a free resource for frontline workers, 'See, Hear & Believe,' built upon lived experiences of DFV among LGBTQ+ individuals. Central to this eLearning program is the emphasis on amplifying lived experiences through compelling video testimonials, promising to transform support services for LGBTQ+ victims and survivors with sensitivity and connection.
'See, Hear and Believe' is not only a successful learning campaign but also a new methodology for safely developing and sharing necessary training with frontline workers, particularly in working with marginalised groups.
This presentation will delve into our collaboration with LGBTQ+ individuals to safely share personal experiences and develop community-owned outcomes, exploring key barriers in creating effective training resources and working with communities facing violence, erasure, and marginalisation.
We will also address the balance of safe storytelling and enjoyable education, aiming to catalyse community-driven change while prioritising safety and agency.
‘See, Hear, Believe’ is a collaborative endeavour shaped by victim-survivors, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and community leaders across Australia. Our mission is to equip frontline workers with indispensable tools to champion LGBTQ+ communities on their journey towards safety and healing. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary information to apply this approach in supporting marginalised groups in your community.

Key Learnings:
1. Safe Storytelling: Discover how to safely engage with, record and share lived experience stories across LGBTQ+ victim-survivors, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and community leaders.
2. Intersectional Sensitivity: Recognise and address the intersectional identities within LGBTQ+ communities to tailor inclusive, affirming, and responsive support services, fostering safer, more inclusive communities.
3. Identity & Connection Framework: Integrate trauma-informed practice into your work with a straightforward, effective framework for nurturing resilience and fostering more inclusive engagements with marginalised communities.
