Holding Space for Shame and Trauma When Engaging With Adults Who Use Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence

Abstract

Some suggest shame and trauma sit in all corners of the work we do with those affected by family, domestic and sexual violence.

This presentation will explore:

- a researched understanding of the embodied experiences and sensations of shame – its nature, power, and manifestations
- how we can work with Shame to harness its potential for motivating respectful behaviour change
- What do we need to improve in our processes and practice to better pacify the impact of shame (and trauma) for our clients?

The above topics will be explored with consideration to diverse cultural frameworks and perspectives, and with a focus on our work with adults who are using types of FDSV.

Key Learnings:

1. An appreciation for how shame impacts those affected by violence – its perpetration and/or experience.
2. An introduction to some basic principles for working more productively with Shame.
3. Core concepts for understanding shame and how it manifests.
