The Power of the Media in Defining Violence in Relationships: Coming Together to Change the Story for Everyone

Abstract

The media (television, print, radio, film, music and social media) plays a pivotal role in how we perceive violence as well as how we construct our own definitions of violence. From a very young age we are socialised via the media how to define and ascribe to gender norms and stereotypes. Yes, we have seen change but it really isn't that long ago that Brittney Spears dressed as a schoolgirl asked her "baby" to "hit me one more time" or that girls worldwide joined Team Edward or Team Jacob in a fight over whether the vampire or wolf was the more preferable boyfriend.

We still have Married at First Sight, Love Island, The Bachelor and Fboy Island. We still read news articles that tell us that despite killing his child, it should be known he was a good colleague. And we have news trials sensationalising the trauma of sexual assault trials for ratings until at least he makes the mistake of going back for his hat.

In this workshop, participants will come together to discuss the problematic media content that in particular children and teenagers are exposed to that could manipulate and distort their understandings of general based violence. Empowered with the ability to create change, participants will work in groups to write statements to the media and create guidelines own what training media agencies should incorporate into their training procedures.

Participants will also come together to identify positive agents of change who have the potential to challenge existing damaging gender stereotypes and determine ways to provide greater exposure.

Participants will leave this workshop having put their voice on record to demand more from our media agencies and to call for greater dignity, respect and compassion. It is time to change the conversation.

Key Learnings:

1. The media plays an important role in teaching people about relationships.

2. Most media agencies have a financial interest in representing stories about violence in a certain way.

3. The media should have better duty of care and act in a more responsible manner towards individuals and groups featured in their content.
