Working Together Under the National Plan: The Role and Importance of Primary prevention, Early Intervention, Response and Recovery to End Violence Against Women
Abstract
In 2024, amidst intensified efforts to combat violence against women, there is a collective recognition of the ongoing journey towards a future where women and their children can live safely and freely. Central to this endeavour is the need for all parts of the system to work together across the spectrum or primary prevention, early intervention, response and recovery.
Reflecting on the landscape shaped by Our Watch's framework, "Change the Story," published in 2021, the presentation acknowledges the progress made in prevention while recognising areas necessitating further exploration and action. Through her presentation, Patty navigates the collaborative terrain of prevention initiatives within the domestic, family, and sexual violence sector, advocating for a shift from isolated efforts towards integrated strategies spanning prevention, early intervention, response, and healing and recovery.
Understanding the nuanced nature of the challenge, Patty underscores the absence of a one-size-fits-all solution to preventing violence against women. Instead, she champions a holistic approach characterised by interdependence and connectivity across diverse strategies and sectors.
In her keynote, Patty sheds light on critical opportunities for bridging primary prevention with early intervention, response, and healing and recovery efforts, advocating for synergy and collaboration across the continuum of prevention work. By highlighting the inherent potential in cross-sectoral cooperation, Patty's presentation aims to inspire greater humility, cohesion, and effectiveness in the ongoing endeavour to end violence against women.
Presentation Key Learnings:
• Understand the objectives of the national approach to primary prevention in Australia and its successes to date.
• Understand how the national framework for primary prevention (Change the story) connects to work across the broad domestic, family, and sexual violence sector.
• Learn about opportunities for better coordination and collaboration across primary prevention, early intervention, response, and recovery, so that collective efforts can be mutually reinforcing.
