How Pilbara Solar is supporting First Nations commercial participation in large scale renewables, to drive self-determination and accelerate decarbonisation
Abstract
In the vast landscapes of Western Australia's Pilbara region, where the sun beats down relentlessly, a quiet revolution is underway. Pilbara Solar, a trailblazer in renewable energy development, is not only reshaping the energy industry but also championing Indigenous empowerment through sustainable projects.
The challenge Pilbara Solar addresses is twofold: accelerating large-scale renewable energy projects to meet carbon reduction targets while ensuring social sustainability. With a deep commitment to the land and its people, Pilbara Solar founders, both renewable energy experts and First Nations leaders, recognised the opportunity to harness renewable energy while empowering Indigenous communities.
Pilbara Solar stands as a beacon of change, empowering First Nations to lead medium to large scale solar, wind and storage project development.
Pilbara Solar operates as a 'profit-for-purpose' renewable energy development service, with a mission to support global decarbonisation while empowering First Nations people. As a social enterprise, Pilbara Solar is 50% owned by the Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC), making it the only large-scale renewable developer and consultancy that is Aboriginal-owned.
Driven by a vision aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Pilbara Solar bridges the gap between commercial realities and Indigenous communities.
Pilbara Solar's comprehensive range of services includes project feasibility assessments, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, securing power customers, financial modelling, funding and financiers. Moreover, their business model provides a framework for First Nations ownership of renewable energy projects, fostering socio-economic transformation and inter-generational wealth creation.
At the heart of Pilbara Solar's success are respected Aboriginal leaders, Mrs Doris Eaton and Mr Peter Windie, as well as individuals like Dr. Geoff James and Dr. Richard Finlay-Jones, internationally recognised leaders in renewable energy development.
As the world looks towards renewable energy as a solution to climate change, Pilbara Solar stands as a shining example of how sustainability and social responsibility can go hand in hand. With their unwavering dedication, Pilbara Solar continues to illuminate the path towards a cleaner, brighter future for all.
