First Nations Self Determination Driving Northern Development: Leadership, Digital Media and Research
Abstract
First Nations self determination is the driving force behind decision making on their land and sea Country and that is having an impact on developing Northern Australia, and nation building of Australia. The most unexplored of the Indigenous estate is what Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander peoples are actually doing and want to do on their traditional lands and sea Country. Over the past decades there have been many different interest groups undertaking various activities on the Indigenous estate, however, there is little understanding of the social and economic impacts on Traditional Owners and their estate. This paper presents the work to date on a documentary series 'On Land and Sea Country' that films and documents research work within a select group of Indigenous communities across Northern Australia in partnership with Traditional owner groups under the direction of the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre and partners including the Northern Australia Land and Sea Management Alliance, First Nations Broadcasting Australia, First Nations Leadership Academy, CSIRO and James Cook University. The purpose of the filming, documenting and gathering of information and data is for the purpose of identifying the Indigenous estate's natural assets and the social and economic determinants including aspirations of participating Traditional Owner groups. The goal is to build and Develop a National Indigenous Environmental Research Network to better inform policy and decision making that is Indigenous led environmental conservation and protection practices.
