Developing Northern Australia: How First Nations Biosecurity Efforts Lead to Indigenous National Building

Abstract

The presentation content will include:
- An overview of the joint initiative between CSIRO and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Catalysing Australia's Biosecurity (CAB). CAB is a nationwide project to transform Australia's biosecurity system. CAB' is a response to the Northern Australian Biosecurity Strategy.
- Introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement by CAB. Including details on how self-determination and Indigenous decision making supports Indigenous led biosecurity on Country. More broadly as a nation, Indigenous people are Australia's first scientists and the value of their knowledge is critical to the development of Northern Australia.
- Outline the goal of CAB's engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community is to support projects and initiatives in developing innovative technology and data systems that support community growth (economic, leadership etc). CAB also recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and technologies are critical
- Empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to lead their own biosecurity efforts will lead to economic outcomes. Equitable partnerships are key to this.

Biography

Mahnoor is an Aboriginal woman, from Mid-West Western Australia belonging to the Badimia Yamatji people. Mahnoor has extensive experience in engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in infrastructure and the environment space. Currently she is working on a nation wide project, jointly delivered by CSIRO and the Departnment of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry called Catalysing Australia's Biosecurity (CAB). Through CAB, she leads the on Country engagement to enhance and transform biosecurity efforts utilising innovative technology and data systems.
