Decarbonisation at scale in the Pilbara
Abstract
The world needs to decarbonise industrial processes as well as remove CO2 from the atmosphere to avoid the worst of a changing climate.
Biomass Projects is developing the world’s largest Biochar based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) project in the world, in the Pilbara, the heart of Australia's iron ore industry.
The project is being established to create CO2 Removal Credits (CORCs) for international markets, using Mesquite, a Weed of National Significance.
The CDR market is currently growing at more than 1100% annually and is fuelled by demand from the voluntary carbon market (VCM), with biochar delivering over 94% of the credits.
The company, Biomass Projects, is also working to produce a supply of high quality renewable metallurgical chars to replace coal-based chars in steel production.
Working in partnership with Traditional Owners, Wirrawandi Aboriginal Corporation (WAC), the company will provide equity as well as contracting and employment opportunities to ensure a future for WAC members.
The processing equipment designed for this project will revolutionise CDR (biochar) projects around the world as part of the global challenge to remove 6 billion tonnes of CO2 annually.
