Single Session Family Therapy - an Effective & Efficient Means of Engaging Children/ Young People & Their Families Therapeutically to Support Better Mental Health Outcomes

Abstract

Single Session Family Therapy (SSFT) provides a unique opportunity for a child/ young person’s voice to be heard by their family and the broader system. The Reflecting Team can amplify their voice and provide validation and strengths-based feedback. SSFT aims to support the family in developing shared understandings of difficulties and to develop their own pathways forward.

Alfred ICYAMHWS is a free, public mental health service providing tertiary level outpatient care to children/ young people up to 26yrs, and their families in south-eastern Melbourne. Our Single Session Family Therapy program has been operating for 15 years and continues to be an effective time-limited therapeutic intervention with more than 50% of families having their needs met in one session.

The presentation will outline the purpose, theoretical underpinnings, structure and outcomes of our Single Session Family Therapy program. It will give a current snapshot of the range and complexity of presenting issues based on 2023 data. It will highlight how the introduction of a Practice Lead position has enhanced focus on clinical skill development and allowed for flexible approaches with families when needed.
